The drainage area, stream network, and monitored stream segments for the Lower Great Miami and Whitewater River Watershed have been detailed by the Ohio EPA Division of Surface Water. The location of the watershed in relation the other watershed throughout the state can also be seen in the small Ohio map on the top right.
According to the Ohio EPA in 2001, the Lower Great Miami and Whitewater River Watershed is impaired primarily by nutrient enrichment and habitat alterations. Over 80% of the river miles are impaired by nutrient enrichment and 40% by other habitat alterations. Such severe river and stream impairments commonly result from human development, inadequate agricultural practices and land use changes in the surrounding area.
